This is a common question that is asked by graduated high school students once they begin to research grants and scholarships. While both of this key items will normally be on the same webpage as one another, it can be confusing as to what is provided by donations and private donors to what funding is provided by the government.

Primarily grants focus on financial-need, where as scholarships focus on merit and skills. A lot of the time only one grant can be applied for at a time. This can mean a student can only apply for a single grant per academic year and may not apply for more.

Essentially there are not meant requirements apart from official documents and tax records from the students’ parents to show total annual income is below the national average.

Who Can Earn or Apply for A Scholarship?

As a few students may know by now applying for a scholarship involves high school transcripts, grade point average, general financial information and a current address. A scholarship form will ask the basics that an individual can provide such as email and a current cell phone number. Most of the time at least two letters of recommendation will be needed from a teacher or faculty member of that student’s high school.

While keeping all of that in mind, it has come to be known that scholarships have earned the title of ‘competitive.’ If there are only a select few from 5, 10, to 200 spots available for students to claim, a competitive scholarship usually means it is a merit or academic based option.

Any student that fits the available eligibility or requirements listed for a scholarship can apply. However, if the student does not fit the eligibility there is a very real chance that their application will be tossed or ignored simply for not following instructions.
